When's the last time you took a moment to marvel at the amazingness that is your pelvis? Here, take a look at the female pelvis.
I mean, this thing is phenomenal.
Do you realize that the shape of the human pelvis is one of the reasons we're able to stand and walk upright? Standing and walking upright are defining characteristics of humans. Other animals have pelvises, that is true, but only humans have a human pelvis.
Your pelvis makes you human!
Go take a walk right now and put your hands on your hips. (Your hips are part of your pelvis.) Pay attention to the way your pelvis moves as you walk. Does it rotate each time you step forward. Does it tilt back and forth when you walk? Does it move up and down? Really take some time to zero in on all the ways your pelvis moves, or doesn't move, when you walk.
Why should you do this little experiment? Because your pelvis can tell you a LOT about your experience of pain and injury in your body. When it doesn't move well, I can assure you that the rest of your body isn't moving well either. In fact, dysfunction of the pelvic floor (the muscles at the base of the pelvis) reflects a whole-body movement problem, not simply a breakdown in the pelvic area.
We've only just skimmed the surface of what it means to love your pelvis. Want to learn more ways to give your pelvis the TLC it deserves? Check out my upcoming classes on pelvic health and walking gait. If you're not the class type, come see me for a private session. I also recommend Katy Bowman's Nutritious Movement for a Healthy Pelvis for a great daily movement practice.
p.s. Do you think the pelvis is a bit heart-shaped, or is that just me? <3
